Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.” (I Corinthians 12:1 – 3)

I want to believe and under gird what Paul is saying in these opening verses of chapter 12. But I also know that over time the human tongue has learned how to, well, to put it one way – cross its fingers when speaking. Now, maybe if by “the Spirit of God” Paul means while in the midst of a spiritual experience – that I could see. And if the Corinthian believers’ previous pagan faith experiences involved more a psychological or emotional frenzy, then I could see and believe the truth of Paul’s words. But I really want to move on to the second section of this passage.

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.” (Verses 4 – 10)

I am moved and motivated by these verses in light of my resolution to speak out about faith issues and to not rest until I have said what I feel needs to be said, according to the same Spirit that Paul speaks about. Oh, beloved reader, you did not know that one can chose to take on a spiritual discipline; that it does not just come upon you for short interludes?! It is true; you can allow the Spirit and Presence of the Lord God to work through you not just when the “Spirit moves you” but to actually ask the Spirit to move you! Each time I sit down to write, I cede over control and allow the Spirit of the Divine to speak through me.

Now, I can not attest (as the writers of the bible did) that everything I write is DIRECTLY from the Lord God. What I can tell you is that I can discern what it good and acceptable, and what does not contribute to the health and well-being of the family of the Divine. Okay, yes, Paul has it correct in the first section of this passage – I could never ever write “let Jesus be cursed” – in fact I tremble just using that phrase as an example. Much better to my spirit is that “Jesus is Lord” and furthermore Lord over me.

You too, beloved reader, could allow the Spirit in you and be a conduit for the Presence of the Divine. You could resolve to enhance or advise your spiritual life. You do not have to wait for the right time or place, the right mood or motivation. Right here, now, as you are reading – you can ask the Divine to be your companion in everything you do. And to draw you out to do things that you never expected to do in the Lord’s name and overshadowed by the “Spirit of God” for . . .

“All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.” (Verse 12)
