I decided to turn away from the story of King David, and am looking to the alternate Old Testament passage. It is a small collection of verses, but these verses might set the stage for thread of pondering and considerations.

“He said to me: O mortal, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you.” (Ezekiel 2:1)

Ezekiel had just seen a vision that reads more like the arrival of a UFO than a visit from the Divine. I am not trying to be funny or downplay what the writer of Ezekiel saw. In fact, in the time of this writing the whole concept of alien visitation was not known; so if we interpret it as such, that is on us. And I fully own it. There is no doubt, though, that Ezekiel believed it was a spiritual visitation.

“And when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me.” (Verse 2)

I have to wonder if what the writer of Ezekiel is describing is/was a metaphor for the times that writer/Ezekiel was in. The writer of Ezekiel says he was among the exiles; and may be his perception is colored by being in a foreign land.

I find it interesting that Ezekiel talks about the spirit entering him, and that this perhaps allowed Ezekiel to understand what was being said to him.

“He said to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord GOD.” (Verses 3 – 4)

Admittedly, this is quite a distance from the Israel of King David. It is funny the roads we find ourselves on when we follow our own agenda and inclinations rather than following God. It is also interesting to discover what is needed to call us back. Perhaps we need a touch of the exotic and alien to get us back to where we should be.

“Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.” (Verse 5)

In the same way, it might take an Aspect of the Divine that is some distance from the norm. As well as a prophet that different from the norm as well. May you, beloved reader, pay attention to what the Divine sends to you. Shalom & Selah!
