“Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9)
Only in the bible, the Word of the Divine who seeks nothing for the God-self but desires to give all to humanity – only a King such as that would ride victorious on . . . . . on a colt, the offspring of a donkey. When we are tempted to get all puffed up about selves, we should remember how Divine and Holy Victory looks like. But this passage is not just and only about the image of Divine Victory but the result of such victory.
“He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.” (Verse 10)
The Lord Almighty does not seek to win in battle but to stop warring altogether. The Divine’s trophy from the struggle in peace. And the Divine’s gift is that same peace; established at the time of creation, confirmed by the exampled of Jesus, and achieved for ever more through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. (Granted, I am lumping together a great many theologies – but I am trying to make a point!)
“As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.” (Verses 11 – 12)
The logical question would be, double of what? I ask that question not doubting that it will come about, but having full confidence that the Divine will, and has, make/made it so. So I look through my life and ask what has been doubled? The answer I come up with is – the here & now, and the world/life to come.
I know the world at large is not at peace. Scan any headline or media outlet, and you will be convinced of that. But my life, my corner of the world, is at peace. Not that I have discovered a magic wand or a magic word to make it so. My peace starts with me and comes from within. I am at peace because the Lord God is in my life. And I have hope in the world/the life to come. I know these two things are magnificent and precious gifts. And I am humbled that I am the recipient of both.
It is my hope, beloved reader, that you are a recipient also of the double gift; that you have thanked the Divine many times and in many ways for this gift; and that you are humble, realizing that it is nothing you have done to deserve this and that is solely because of the grace and mercy of the Lord God. Shalom & Selah!
